Supplemental Security Income and Structured Settlements I The Social Security Administration provides not only for retirement benefits, but also survivorship benefits for surviving spouses and children, minor or disabled, as well as benefits to disabled children of retired individuals. II The Social Security Administration is responsible for two major programs that provide benefits based on disability, in addition to Social Security retirement benefits: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which is based on prior work under Social Security, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Under SSI, payments are made on the basis of financial need. These pages describe the eligibility requirements and benefits under each of these programs. |
